As a student, academics are normally our first priority. However, if you are not commuting, college is also your home for at least four years. This means that you are not just interested in academics, but the rest of your time during your college career as well. What are some of the best clubs to join in college? We walk you through why you should join clubs, the benefits, and clubs to join at your university. Find the Clubs. One of the first things that you can do to get more involved and meet more people is to join clubs. It also is a great college resume starter to be involved in clubs or organizations on campus. One of the first ways that you can start getting involved before you are even on campus is to apply for honors, scholars, or learning communities. Honors usually mean harder classes. Scholars usually entail living together participating in activities and events outside the classroom. The learning community is simply learning with others that have similar majors, paths, or interests as you. Especially in your first year, you are going to be concerned with finding your friends and finding what you want to spend your time here at college dedicating yourself to. I was way overinvolved my first year, but it helped me find the 2 or 3 things that I really stuck with, focus on, and now have leadership roles in. You don’t want to overbook yourself, but you do want to give yourself the chance to find other things to do than just study. You will quickly learn that resumes and networking are super important in college. There is no better way to start on the right foot as a freshman than to get involved in some clubs and organizations. You will start building your resume and network as soon as you do. Involvement Fairs. The first thing that you want to look for is the involvement fairs. They usually take place in the first week or two of school. Our involvement fair is held during our first week that we call “welcome week”. An involvement fair is basically just a huge fair where all the organizations and clubs get together to show what they have to offer. You can go up to each booth that you are interested in and talk to current students in the club, sign up for emails, etc. Now, you don’t want to sign up for emails from 25 different clubs, however, it is a great opportunity to see for yourself what your school has to offer. If you go to a big school this can be a huge event. The involvement fair at my school has over 1,000 student organizations and takes about 2 hours to get through if you are actually stopping to talk to clubs you are interested in. It spans throughout the main part of our campus and is probably one of the biggest events of the year. It isn’t just for first-year students, a lot of second-year students like to go back and see what they missed. Some sophomore students maybe didn’t find the right club to delve into their freshman year. Many of the clubs may also offer free things, food, etc. which is a nice little addition to the hectic day. No matter how big or small your school is, it is likely that they offer an involvement fair. Even if you don’t have anyone to go with you, I really encourage you to go. I think that you will get a lot out of it and regret it if you don’t. Why Should College Students Join Clubs. There are many reasons that college students should join clubs. One good reason is that it gives you another opportunity to make friends. I have some great friends from my dorm and my classes, but I found a lot of my friends through clubs and organizations. Think about how much you would have in common. You already decided to go to the same college, you may even be in the same grade, and then you decided to join the same club. That means that you already have so much in common with the people in this club that you are bound to get along great with at least a few of them. Many people enjoy their classes and the other work that they do, but their truest memories from college are normally about people, places, and other things that they were involved in like clubs and organizations. How to Get Involved in College Clubs. As I said earlier the first step is to attend the involvement fair. If you cannot do so, then your next step is to check your college website. It should all the information you need to at least get in touch with certain people regarding certain clubs. If it is an open club, you can just locate the time and place for the first meeting and show up. If it isn’t, then you can find the contact info of the person in charge and see what you need to do in order to apply. Many of the open clubs have certain requirements like saying that you are a “dedicated member: if you attend a certain number of meetings or other events. Most are simply open and you can attend when you can and not attend when you can’t. It is a nice little addition to your college experience, and the clubs can also be a benefit to your career. However, it is important to see if there are any clubs that stimulate your passions as well. Careers are important, but clubs are a great way to find something you enjoy. What Type of Clubs are in College. The types of clubs can depend on the size of your college. But overall there are usually many different types of clubs to choose from. You can choose a club that coincides with you major like: Pre-nursing club Pre-dental club Women in business club Etc. You can also choose clubs that cater to your passion like: Club softball Basketball Volleyball Swimming. There are often even groups like: Capella groups Choirs Smaller bands Drawing clubs Sculpting clubs Etc. Which is for the more artistic crowd. If you are interested in Greek life, then you can rush a sorority or fraternity. There are even professional sororities and fraternities which are different than social and look great on resumes. Social: Just to name a few and not every fraternity or sorority is on all colleges. Professional: Tau Beta Pi Pi Tau Sigma Theta Tau. It just depends on what you are looking for and what level of time commitment you are willing to put into the fraternity or sorority. More than likely, there will be at least one club that interests you. Is it Good to Join Clubs in College. This can be up to each individual person, but I believe that it is beneficial. Sometimes when you’re at school it can feel like academics are taking over your life. You go to class every day but you live at school as well. This means that you are constantly thinking about your classes, seeing others study, and seeing others succeed.
